Advanced Search does not work, but Simple Search does

Alfresco Community 5.1-05

If we use the Simple Search (upper right hand corner) of Alfresco share, it works fine.  It can search custom fields as well as the defaults (we use custom models for some of our documents). 

But if we use the Advanced Search, we get the error "We hit a problem getting your search results. Try searching again." 

At this point, it doesn't pick up *anything* (I don't care if it picks up custom fields right now -- I just want it to pick up default fields at the least). 

I'm not sure where to start looking for clues, what files might affect Advanced Search behavior, what logs to turn on, etc?  Suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

By 5.1-05, do you mean Alfresco Community Edition 201605 GA Release Notes ?

Do you see any errors in the Share logs or Platform logs ?
