how to separate the Alfresco community 5.0 Postgresql database and application tier

hi,

We are running Alfresco Community 5.0 and it bundle the postgreSQL and everything running inside the SAME VM box.

is it doable to separate the existing PostgreSQL to ANOTHER vm so that Alfresco application tier and PostgreSQL database run on top of different VM and we can arrange the VM to any hardware box we have ?

please suggest what is the steps to relocate the EXISTING postgreSQL to another VM box with Windows server.

Re: how to separate the Alfresco community 5.0 Postgresql database and application tier

Hi!

Yes, it is feasible. The simplest way would be to just setup Alfresco on the other server, export the schema from the current server and import it on the new one. Also, copy the alf_data/contentstore over to the new server. The approach to exporting / importing depends on the database being used (lookup the appropriate documentation) - if you have used the default Alfresco installer you will be dealing with PostgreSQL which provides the tools pgdump/pgrestore for export/import.

Cheers,

Cristina.

tks for the reply.

"The simplest way would be to just setup Alfresco on the other server, export the schema from the current server and import it on the new one. "

I think it should be just install Alfresco application tier on other box, then in the data connection setup, just point to the existing server's postgreSQL, this is it?

btw, is Alfresoc 5.0 still downloadable? may I know where is it ?

Then we start to upgrade the Alfresco from 5.0 to 5.2, then 5.2 to 7.0, this approach both Alfresco applicatoin tier and PostgreSQL in the old box will be upgraded ?

can I simply , as we are uising Alfresco 5.0, then we setup Alfresco 7.0 on the new VM box, and point it to the old box which has the existing PostfreSQL , then the installation see the old postgreSQL it will upgrade to the updated PostgreSQL version ?

"Also, copy the alf_data/contentstore over to the new server. The approach to exporting / importing depends on the database being used (lookup the appropriate documentation) "

This is not about PosdgreSQL, it is about Alfresco tier ? what is alf_data/contentstore for ?

"- if you have used the default Alfresco installer you will be dealing with PostgreSQL which provides the tools pgdump/pgrestore for export/import."

we have used the default alfresco installer,  you mean if we setup alfresco on the new BOX it will install updated version of PostgreSQL on the new box too and we can use pgdump/pgrestore to backup and restore content from old PostgreSQL on the old box to new PostgreSQL on the nex box ?

in this case , AFTER  pgrestore, all old postgreSQL content will be UPGRADED to new PostgreSQL structure?
