Want alfresco to pick up documents from a shared drive or FTP

Below is the requirement. Appreciate your suggestion and samples.

User will copy the scanned files along with metadata in a text file to a shared driver or FTP.

We have to upload the document automatically from the FTP loaction and assign the metadata by reading the text document. If it fails, we have to move the document to Failed folder in Shared drive. I am looking at 2 options.

1. Start a workflow as soon as user copy a document in shared drive.

2. Does alfresco has any FTP listening/watch machanism where, as soon as a user uploads a document, alfresco can call some custom code/APIs.. This custom code will be written to read the metadata and upload the content file into repository and update the metadata to the content file.
