Usability | Editing Word Doc 'in-line'

I have uploaded a word doc  and a text file (added content) and marked them as 'inline-editable'.
Now when I select the edit option for the .txt it opens in the Editor in Alfresco's
UI, while I am unable to get the same when I try to 'edit' the word doc.

Is it not possible to see a word doc open in 'Ms-word like' editor in alfresco as it happens for a .txt file/html file?

Re: Usability | Editing Word Doc 'in-line'

Hi there,
i assume you refer to what you can see in the internet explorer with linked documents, but those are not "inline editors" but the real office, just opened in the browser window.  I guess would have to do two different things -
1) include an editor, which can work with office docs and map it to new mime types. I don't know, though, if such an webpage inline editor exists - well except for google docs, that is Smiley Happy
2) remap the office documents to mime type text/plain :-) that would give you the raw file.

Sorry, no time to explain at length, but you may find some useful
hints on this topic:

Hi Norgan and Sacco,

Thanks for the response and suggestions, I got it by setting the edit-link-type to webdav.

Thanks again!

Re: Usability | Editing Word Doc 'in-line'

Thanks for the response and suggestions, I got it by setting the edit-link-type to webdav.

You're welcome, but be aware that this solution works only for Internet Explorer.
Something similar could be implemented for Firefox by adding functionality to the
Firefox Add-on to open links of a particular class by passing the URL directly to an
external program, but this has not yet been done.  I will probably implement this
sometime this Summer if nobody else does it first (essentially, when it manages to struggle
to near the top of my list) and will, of course, post the results here if and when I get
it done.

Cheers

You could use the "open as webdav" plugin for firefox, if you are using windows.

Re: Usability | Editing Word Doc 'in-line'

I've made a proof of concept of editing a docx inline.

You can see it at http://docx2web.appspot.com

As you'll see, it isn't integrated with alfresco yet…
