Why have you changed the download mechanism?
The move was a hard decision, much debated by our internal teams, but we believe that the overall gain will be beneficial to all.
To begin with, this move has helped us simplify our download landing page so that users can download the right file they are after. Users who go directly to SourceForge will often get a list of files, or perhaps be directed to download the default version. This created some confusion at times. The new mechanism allows us to direct users (especially new Alfresco users) with helpful information to find the file that suits their needs.
We also found that release cycles were being thwarted by the synchronization cycles of the various software mirrors. By having our own download mechanism, new files can be available to all as soon as they are uploaded.
By managing our own download sites, we can gain more accurate statistics which helps our various product teams tailor the product to the community needs. We also can ensure that the product is available to you all, while most mirrors are reliable - this just provides an extra guarantee.
My download manager xyz reports that the download site is not resumable?
Our download site does not support the optional Accept-Range HTTP header that some clients require for resumable or multithreaded downloads. This does not indicate however our site doesn't work with download managers, it just means there is some compatibility issues. In particular, we have ran into problems with:
However, we've successfully tested these managers, and proven they work:
- Firefox 3 (built-in download manager)
- Google Chrome (built-in download manager)
- FlashGet
Regardless of this issue, the files should still download correctly without resume or multi-threads.

What do I need to use BitTorrent?

We won't go into the use of these particular clients - you will have to consult their various user manuals for instructions. But in general, you need to feed these clients a torrent file, which is available as an option on our download pages.
